Tanks: The first tank was designed in 1915, by the British, and first used in combat during the battle of the Somme in 1916.
Flame-throwers: The first test for a flame-thrower was in 1911, by the Germans. The first use was in 1915, by the Germans, near Verdun.
Poison Gas: The first large scale use of Gas was in 1915 against the Russians.
Aircraft Carriers: The first time a boat had an aircraft take off and land on its deck was in 1917.
Machine Guns: Before ww1, the most popular rapid firing weapon was the Gatling gun. During ww1 the main rapid firing weapon was the Vickers gun. It needed a six-man team but was very reliable.
